The Heart Center at St. Louis Children's Hospital is the region's largest pediatric heart center, nationally recognized as a top heart program. They have extensive experience treating children with common to complex heart issues, from cardiac surgeries and cardiac catheterizations to heart monitoring. They are the region’s go-to heart program for second opinions and referrals for advanced pediatric heart care. 

 

The Heart Center Nurse Practitioner will be responsible for providing care to infants, children, and adults with congenital and acquired heart disease in the intensive care unit and on the transitional care unit. This patient population includes, but is not limited to, pre and/or post-operative cardiac surgery patients, dysrhythmias, cardiomyopathy, pre and post-operative care of heart and lung transplants, and patients requiring Ventricular Assist Devices (VAD) or Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation.  They will work collaboratively with the supervising Washington University physician to conduct patient assessments, physical exams, and diagnose health and developmental problems. The Heart Center Nurse Practitioner will participate in the Heart Center medical rounds, including the presentation of clinical information and the progress and management of patients. They will assist with establishing a treatment plan and discharge plan. All Heart Center Nurse Practitioners are provided dedicated time for research, education, and special projects.

Role Purpose

The critical care nurse practitioner is a healthcare provider who works collaboratively within a multidisciplinary health team to provide comprehensive care to patients and families in critical care settings. They possess a high level of clinical expertise in dealing with patients with acute and chronic illnesses commonly encountered in the critical care setting. The nurse practitioner demonstrates advanced clinical knowledge, communication, interdisciplinary collaboration, professionalism, and systems-based practice. They work with administration staff, nurses, physicians, med/surg trainees, and other staff to ensure safe, effective, high-quality patient care. Minimum Board Certification(s):BJH: Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (AGACNP) or Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (ACNP)SLCH ICU: Certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Primary Care (CPNP-PC) – will require CPNP-AC within 2 years of hire, Certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Acute Care (CPNP-AC), or Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP); SLCH NICU: NICU Neonatal Nurse Practitioner Certification (NNP)Preferred Board Certification(s):SLCH ICU: Certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Acute Care (CPNP-AC)

 Responsibilities

  • Provides compassionate, appropriate, and effective patient and family-centered care for health recovery, illness prevention, treatment of critically ill, or end-of-life care.
  • Communicates and collaborates effectively with patients, families, physicians, medical/surgical trainees, and other health professionals.
  • Demonstrates the highest level of accountability for professional practice by participating in professional development, quality initiative/performance activities, and implementing standards of care within area of specialization.
  • Responsible for assessment, diagnosis, treatment, management, education, health promotion, and care coordination for critically ill patients and families with acute health needs.
  • BJC has determined this is a safety-sensitive position. The ability to work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner is an essential function of this job.
