The Division of Pediatric Cardiac Critical Care, Department of Pediatrics at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt (MCC) seeks an experienced, board-certified pediatric cardiac intensivist to serve as medical director for the Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (PCICU). This position is available on the Tenure, Clinician Educator, or Clinical Practice track. Successful applicants will be board certified in Pediatric Cardiology and Pediatric Critical Care or have one year of advanced training in Pediatric Cardiac Critical Care. The ideal candidate will have at least 5 years of clinical experience as an attending physician and demonstrate a track record of excellence in clinical care, graduate medical education, quality improvement or research and possess outstanding communication, teamwork, and leadership skills. Academic track and rank will be commensurate with experience.
The medical director will provide strategic and operational leadership in the PCICU, will foster a culture of clinical excellence, and will collaborate closely with nursing, quality and safety leaders, administrative partners and multi-disciplinary teams to ensure the highest standard of patient care and to promote the mission of the Division and of the Pediatric Heart Institute.
In view of the creation of a new Division of Pediatric Cardiac Critical Care within the Department of Pediatrics, the current medical director will be promoted to the role of Division Director effective April 1, 2026. The Division of Pediatric Cardiac Critical Care is currently comprised of 10 faculty members who staff a 27 bed PCICU and support an ACGME-approved fellowship training program in collaboration with the Division of Pediatric Critical Care. The PCICU is an integral component of the Pediatric Heart Institute (PHI), serving as the regional referral center for children with congenital and acquired heart disease from throughout Tennessee and the Southeast. Significant investment has been made in the PHI with the recent recruitment of Dr. Carlos Mery as the Division Chief of Pediatric Cardiovascular Surgery and Dr. Larry Markham as the Division Chief of Pediatric Cardiology. We currently perform approximately 475 cases yearly with a projection to grow to 600 cases yearly in the next 5 years.
