In addition, we have a robust partnership with our adult hospital as we serve a large Adult Congenital population with care extending to end stage heart failure as well as transplant care.
The 23-bed Pediatric cardiac intensive care unit at UF provides the comprehensive services of critical care for patients with congenital heart disease from infants to adults. The critical care division includes a multi-disciplinary team including critical care physicians, nurse practitioners and physician assistants, nurses, pharmacists, social workers, respiratory therapists, speech with occupational therapists and physical therapists. All medical and surgical subspecialties are available to the team including an advanced vascular team. We have recently expanded our nurse practitioners and physician assistants to ten team members to provide a second extender at night in addition to the attending and previous extender or fellow. This expansion would also allow additional extender coverage over the weekend shifts.
The PCICU admits over 400 patients annually. The pediatric cardiac critical care transport team performs multiple transports including ECMO transports from all over the region and internationally. The cardiac critical care team along the surgical team has active participation in national consortiums like ACTION and is intimate part of their national leadership. We have a thriving advanced pediatric cardiac critical care fellowship with opportunities for leadership in education. Our intensivists and practitioners are also part of an active simulation Program at the University of Florida and continue to make inroads into both education and patient safety with innovations in simulation.
