The Division of Cardiovascular Critical Care in the Department of Cardiology at Boston Children’s Hospital is recruiting an experienced physician leader to serve as Medical Director of the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU) and join our world-renowned cardiac intensive care team. The Medical Director will report to the Chief of the Division of Cardiovascular Critical Care and serve as the senior physician leader responsible for the clinical performance of the CICU. Responsibilities will include oversight of clinical practice, faculty performance and development, mentorship, and the continued development of a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement. The Medical Director will directly oversee the Division’s Quality Improvement and Safety, Research, and Operations Directors, including work related to staffing and coverage, clinical effort, onboarding, workflow, and other operational priorities, and will partner closely with the Division Chief on faculty recruitment and development and divisional strategy. The Medical Director will also have an important role in the broader leadership of the Department of Cardiology and Heart Center, and we are particularly interested in candidates who wish to contribute beyond the CICU and pursue broader leadership responsibilities over time.
Candidates must be Board Certified or Eligible in Pediatric Cardiology or Pediatric Critical Care Medicine, with additional advanced training and substantial experience in Cardiac Intensive Care, or be dual-trained in Pediatric Cardiology and Pediatric Critical Care Medicine. Candidates should have substantial clinical experience, a record of progressive leadership responsibility, and demonstrated ability to lead physicians and multidisciplinary teams, build consensus, address complex clinical and operational challenges, and improve clinical performance. Candidates must be eligible for appointment at the Assistant or Associate Professor level at Harvard Medical School, with the role requiring ongoing teaching.
Our 44-bed, state-of-the-art Cardiac Intensive Care Unit at Boston Children’s Hospital is one of the largest units managing children and adults with congenital and acquired heart disease in the United States. More than 1,600 newborns, infants, children, and adults are admitted each year, including patients with complex congenital heart disease, those undergoing cardiac surgery and catheter-based interventions, patients with advanced heart failure, and patients requiring mechanical circulatory support. Available therapies include all forms of pharmacologic support, mechanical ventilation, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), ventricular assist devices (VAD), and renal replacement therapy. Our referral base includes regional, national, and international patients.
Full-time cardiac critical care physicians work closely with cardiovascular surgeons, cardiologists, anesthesiologists, advanced practice clinicians, nurses, and other subspecialty teams in collaborative practice within the Heart Center. The Division of Cardiovascular Critical Care has a strong commitment to clinical innovation, outcomes improvement, education, and research. Excellent resources for academic development and conducting clinical, translational, data science, quality improvement, outcomes, and basic science research are available through the Division, Department of Cardiology, Heart Center, and Boston Children’s Hospital. Academic advancement through research, educational activities, and other academic contributions is strongly encouraged and supported. In accordance with the Massachusetts Pay Transparency Law, the annual base salary range for this position will be $225,000-$350,000 based on academic rank and relevant experience. The estimated annual total compensation range is $325,000- $560,000 and reflects the estimated overall value of compensation and benefits associated with this position. Final compensation will be determined at the time of offer and will consider qualifications, experience, internal equity, and institutional policies.
