This webinar will provide a practical overview of training pathways to becoming a cardiac intensivist, focusing on dual-board certification versus a one-year CICU fellowship. Through a brief overview and panelist experiences, attendees will learn key differences in training structure, application strategies, and career implications. The session will emphasize actionable guidance for trainees navigating fellowship decisions. 

Intended Audience:

  • Pediatric residents considering cardiology and/or critical care
  • Pediatric cardiology fellows and critical care fellows
  • Early career faculty exploring or reflecting on CICU training pathways
  • Medical students with interest in pediatric cardiac critical care

By the end of this session, participants will be able to: 

  • Compare the structure, requirements, and timelines of dual-board certification versus one-year CICU fellowship pathways 
  • Evaluate the advantages and limitations of each pathway in relation to individual career goals 
  • Describe common sequencing options (critical care-first vs. cardiology-first) and factors influencing these decisions 
  • Apply practical strategies for applying to second fellowships or advanced CICU training positions
